Here is a list of interesting facts that you might not know about your baby's sleep...

Babies spend about 50% of their sleep in active Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. 

Babies start their sleep in active sleep and spend equal amounts of time in active and quiet sleep. 

This means that 50% of baby sleep is relatively light and often filled with dreams. 

Light sleep may mean your baby wakes more often. 

If your baby is struggling to stay asleep during light sleep, you may consider being extra quiet during their sleep cycle transitions (45-60 minutes from start of sleep), swaddling, or using white noise like from a NapNap mat.

Did you know that during their first few weeks, newborn babies are asleep more than they are awake? 

A baby's sleep needs are, on average, between 16 and 22 hours per 24-hour period. 

This does vary a lot amongst babies, but it can even vary from day to day for the same baby.

Babies’ light sleep actually has a purpose.

Many new parents think that if you drop a nap in the day, then their little one will have more chance of sleeping through the night.

Moro reflex, also known as startle reflex, is something that all babies have.

Also known as the 'startle reflex' you may have noticed your baby suddenly making jerky movements whilst asleep.

This is perfectly normal but can be particularly troublesome during sleep time, as it may wake your baby up from sound sleep.

Some parents find swaddling their baby can help to prevent them waking up when this reflex kicks in.

Babies are not born knowing the timings of night and day. It takes time for them to get in sync.
 
If you'd like them to tune in a little quicker, expose them to lots of natural daylight and involve them in the stimulating hustle and bustle of your daytime activities.
 
When the evening comes, try to protect your baby from exposure to artificial lighting. Make things a little quieter, calmer and quieter the closer it gets to bedtime and you'll soon notice that they'll respond.
